The Speaker of the Senate presides over the Senate, and is appointed by the Governor General on the advice of the Prime Minister. Unlike the Speaker in the House of Commons, he or she may participate in debates. But like the Speaker of the House, the Senate Speaker also carries out many ceremonial and diplomatic functions.
